Did you know?

17.01.2011- To feed close to 600 mouths three times a day is not always an easy task, especially in the West African countries the ship visits.

Our Food Services department's mission is to provide healthy food for our crew and patients all year round. Did you know that...

  • the ship regularly receives frozen, chilled, and dry goods sent by maritime 20 and 40 foot containers from our logistical centers in the US and in Holland?
  • approx. 4'000 kg of rice is consumed on the Africa Mercy each year?
  • between 2'000-3'000 dishes are washed each day (this includes plates, bowls and cups)?
  • close to 30 tons of meat are consumed onboard the Africa Mercy each year?
  • between 70-90 loaves of bread are baked every morning on the ship?
  • the Food Service department alone counts 23 positions (galley and dining room staff)?
  • an additional 10-15 local volunteers help the team achieve their mission?
  • food served on the ship is a variety (and sometimes mix up) of European, American and African dishes
  • the patients have their own African cooks providing them with the food they are used to?
  • 400 crew, 120 local volunteers and up to 100 patients eat on the ship, which makes an average of 1'500 meals per day to serve?
  • In addition to volunteering, our crew also pay for their own accommodation and food on board the ship?
