Soldi HaitiMercy Ships teams mobilize to bring medical help to Haiti. Utilizing the processes and procedures that have been developed on board our hospital ships, Mercy Ships has mobilized its Disaster Response Team and is engaging with partners in Haiti to provide relief and capacity -building programmes. Your urgent financial help is needed.

Mercy Ships has mobilized its Disaster Response Team to address the destruction and devastation that have occurred in Haiti.  This Team has been designed to assess and mobilize Mercy Ships volunteers and assets to address specific needs in relation to medical and non-medical issues. 

We have been in communication with existing and potential partners starting just hours after the earthquake occurred. The execution of our Disaster Response will continue for many months and possibly years to address all that has happened to the people of Haiti. This is consistent with our focus of providing sustainable relief to the areas we are serving with the assurance of local partners that can keep the relief effort continuing long after the Teams have returned back to home.

In relation to specific Haitian Teams, our decision in mobilizing teams has been based on a  process of seeking to address the needs of our partners on the ground.  Mercy Ships is partnering with organizations such as Humedica and Food for the Hungry.

Our teams are both medical and non-medical and have been mobilized in relation to skills needed and partners’ ability to support and sustain programmes.  Our first team has left today, while other teams may be asked to serve in the months ahead.  The nature of the catastrophe will complicate logistics on the ground for our Disaster Response Team; the patience of our volunteers is much appreciated.

Mercy Ships operates the entire organization under the same premise whether it is with our ships or with our Mercy Teams.  We have clearly defined procedures that allow for maximum benefit from every donation and skill from our volunteers.  Our focus is to respond quickly, but in a manner that ensures long-term success at delivering hope and healing to those that have been affected by the Haiti tragedy. 

This natural disaster in Haiti is a perfect example of why we need to strive to establish more hospital ships so that we can meet the recurring needs of this hurting world.
